World Wetlands Day 2012
Youth activist organization PAHAL, in collaboration with Punjab State council of science and technology organized a commendable event celebrating World Wetlands Day, at an internationally famous wetland, Kanjli. Quoting on the 2012’s theme, “Wetlands and Tourism”, Mr. Mahesh Kumar suggested to promote wetlands as major tourist spots of India. Various painting competitions and declamation competition were held in which about 50 school children participated and bagged prizes

Prof. Lakhbir Singh President PAHAL talked about the role of wetlands in the persistence of nature. And to the worst of it, Punjab has been totally ignoring the wetlands. He also told that where on one hand wetlands provide natural beauty to the earth, also help in balancing the optimum humidity in the environment. These are habitats of many birds and animals. For a balanced living of people on earth, minimum 3% of land is necessary to be occupied by wetlands. Quoting the condition of Kanjli wetland, he said that the wetland that is internationally famous for being situated at the banks of KALI VEIN blessed by Guru Nanak, is being totally ignored by various agencies, educational departments, society, MC and government. At that moment, the executive of Punjab state council for science and technology, Mr. Ajay Divan also showcased his worry about the ignorance of the Kanjli wetland and stressed the need of it’s popularization at the international level so that it can become a centre of attraction of tourist masses.
Among all, Mr. Brett Mayfeild, Sh Tarlok S. Chahal(N.R.I.), DDM NABARD Sh. Ravinder Jaiswal, Sh. Davinderpal Singh forest department executive also addressed about wetlands. In painting competitions, first prize was bagged by Mandeep kaur from St. Raghubir Singh Memorial Aims School while second prize went to Pradeep Singh from St. Thomas school and the third prize was bagged by Sukhpal Singh of same school. In declamation competitions, first prize went to Rajni Sharma of Innocent Hearts Education college while second prize was bagged by Harbinder Kaur. On this day, various putranjeeva, neem and viheda trees were planted with help of forest department Kapurthla. Mr Sanjay Sharma from Sanjay karate school, Bageshwer Singh, Manoj Kumar, Gurmukh Singh Ambedkar Society, Jadbir Shaalapuri, Advocate Pankaj Sharma, Prof. Sukhjeet kaur, Sudesh bharti, Danish Rajput, Smt. Aarti, Davinder singh and 50 more young girls and boys marked their presence. At the end, Sh. Ravinder Jaiswal, NRI Tarlok Singh Chahal, Sh. Ajay Diwan and Prof Lakhbir Singh distributed prizes to children.
